Trump Ties Immigration Demands To DACA Deal, Including Border Wall

Sen. Bob Corker R-Tenn. talks to reporters on June 21 White House Lays Out Immigration Demands, Including Wall Funding

When President Trump announced the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in September, he said he was giving Congress six months to find a legislative solution that would allow the 690,000 young unauthorized immigrants now protected from deportation under DACA to stay in the country legally.

"These findings outline reforms that must be included as part of any legislation addressing the status of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients", Trump wrote in a letter to Congress accompanying the list, using the official name for the amnesty order.

"These priorities are essential to mitigate the legal and economic consequences of any grant of status to Daca recipients", Mr Trump's legislative affairs director Marc Short said.

The whole proposal is a total 180 from the "deal" that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi declared they had struck with Trump after a meeting three weeks ago, in which Trump allegedly agreed to sign a bill that legalized DREAMers in response for some undefined demands on border security. "If the president was serious about protecting the Dreamers, his staff has not made a good faith effort to do so", they said in a statement.

If enacted, the White House priorities could result in the deportation of Dreamers' parents. The White House made clear it would not be pushing for Dreamers to achieve USA citizenship, only legal status, in a potential deal. The list includes financially targeting "sanctuary cities" that have resisted the Trump administration's efforts to crack down on illegal immigrants.

Republicans in Congress have introduced several bills that include aspects of Trump's ideas, but many Democrats and immigration groups see the proposals as too harsh.

Mr. Schumer and Mrs. Pelosi, who received the immigration principles on Sunday, reacted with dismay.

The White House's wish list targets the flow of unaccompanied minors into the United States. The plan also seeks to reduce the number of people who overstay their visas and reform how green cards that establish legal permanent residents are granted.

Any deal will need to get at least 60 votes to clear the upper chamber, and make it to Trump's desk, meaning it will need the support of both Democrats and Republicans.
