Republican members of the Federal Communications Commission initially remained silent about President Trump's call to challenge and possibly revoke licenses that allow NBC and other networks to remain on the air.

"The FCC under my leadership will stand for the First Amendment", Pai continued, "and under the law the FCC does not have the authority to revoke a license of a broadcast station based on content of a particular newscast".

Blumenthal said the FCC, not Trump, has the authority to approve broadcaster licenses and may not base a decision on his dislike of content. "However, as public trustees, broadcast licensees may not intentionally distort the news: the FCC has stated that 'rigging or slanting the news is a most heinous act against the public interest'".

Trump got even tougher in a subsequent tweet, saying: "Network news has become so partisan, distorted and fake that licenses must be challenged and, if appropriate, revoked".

Pai previously lamented the number of complaints the FCC received about taking away licenses from cable broadcasters.

And it could be very a negative (or even triggering) experience for people who have an eating disorder. Others said Google was shaming them for opting to take alternative routes, rather than walking.

The FCC doesn't issue broadcast licenses to networks, but it does issue licenses to individual stations. It issues licenses to owners of television stations, which must be periodically renewed. Pai, who was appointed by Trump, was sure to point out that it's "not within the FCC's jurisdiction to handle fake news".

"I ask for your unwavering commitment that you will ensure the First Amendment remains a cornerstone of our democracy and that you will not follow through on this direction from the President", Blumenthal wrote.

"History won't be kind to silence", she said.

Previously, telecom experts said that the FCC is unlikely to help Trump punish networks but that Pai may have been reluctant to say so publicly because Trump could demote him from the chairmanship, a Politico article said.
