One of the black cadets allegedly targeted by racial slurs scrawled on a whiteboard at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School was responsible for the incident, Air Force Academy officials announced Tuesday.

They said "Go Home..." followed by a racial slur.

Officials say the individual admitted responsibility and that this was validated by the investigation by Air Force Academy officials. They say the person confessed.

The cadet candidate, whose identity was not disclosed, was no longer enrolled, although it's unclear whether he was expelled or withdrew from the academy. "They were written, and that deserved to be addressed", he said in an email to the Gazette.

The slurs were found in September at a dormitory that houses students attending the academy's prep school.

Surrounded by students and staff, Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria blasted the "horrible language" used and said it would be "tone deaf" to ignore "the dackdrop of what is going on in our country - things like Charlottesville and Ferguson, the protests in the NFL" in discussing the racist words. "If you can't treat someone from another race or different color skin with dignity and respect, then you need to get out".

"If you can't treat someone from another gender, whether that's a man or a woman, with dignity and respect, then you need to get out", he said. On Monday, police in Riley County, Kansas revealed that a 21-year-old Black man admitted to vandalizing his own auto with racist messages as a "Halloween prank that got out of hand". "These racial slurs can not be tolerated".

Hate-crime hoaxes seem to be on the rise, but the number is tiny compared with actual hate crimes, he said.

The episode renewed concerns that falsely reported hate crimes could make it more hard for people with legitimate grievances to be taken seriously, particularly in a time when the reports of hate crimes are highly politicized.

Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino, said hate-crime hoaxes are often meant to attract or divert attention or they can be a political statement. "We have seen an unprecedented spike in the number of hate- and bias-related incidents targeting American Muslims and others across the board".
