Both parties have the right to extend the commercial terms of this agreement to expand coverage to a further four million homes and businesses by 2025. Work will begin in 2018 and aim to have the first phase completed by 2021.

In the same week that BT admitted that it is planning yet more price hikes, Vodafone and CityFibre have announced plans to build their own fibre-to-the-premises network to take on BT. The agreement only addresses the consumer side with Vodafone and they have some exclusivity during the build cycle.

Vodafone and CityFibre, the UKs largest alternative provider of wholesale fibre network infrastructure, today announced a long-term strategic partnership that will bring ultrafast Gigabit-capable full fibre broadband to up to five million United Kingdom homes and businesses by 2025.

This provides a more robust and faster connection, but is more expensive to deploy.

The deal will up the pressure on BT, which owns the majority of Britain's broadband infrastructure through subsidiary Openreach.

A message that was echoed again today "The agreement with CityFibre provides us with access to a superior product, at a lower cost and with better service conditions than the regulated wholesale terms offered by the incumbent operator to access legacy copper telephone broadband network".

Qatari investor selling $1.46 billion stake in India's Bharti Airtel
Bharti Airtel Ltd is now trading at Rs 490.75, down by Rs 23.6 or 4.59% from its previous closing of Rs 514.35 on the BSE . Given the sale price of Rs 481 per share, the sale of this stake realises a significant gain for TPPL.

Vodafone UK Chief Executive Nick Jeffery added: "Vodafone is already playing the leading role in building the Gigabit Society across Europe by providing customers with high-speed, high-quality broadband".

"The amount of data the mobile networks are carrying is going up by 50% a year - and as you build more and more mobile sites to cope with the demand in traffic. you need more fibre to carry that signal back from the base stations into the network".

When asked if the announcement was at all influenced by the UK's imminent departure from the EU, Mesah said: "We've been working on this for 6 years and 10 months". "But it'll be out the 42 cities we're now operate in".

The company owns core fibre-optic infrastructure in cities including Sheffield, Edinburgh and Bristol and has been seeking telecoms retail partners to secure funding to build links into homes.

Broadband speeds are a huge source of frustration for United Kingdom consumers, with BT and telecoms regulator Ofcom at loggerheads over the speed that the traditional copper network is being upgraded.

Chief Executive of CityFibre Greg Mesch said: “This agreement will unlock the UKs full fibre future and is a major step forward in delivering our vision for a Gigabit Britain.
