Dovizioso, though, went off himself moments later and Marquez's title victory was confirmed.

"I think you have good highlights of the race", Marquez joked of his Turn 1 save after a back-and-forth for the lead with Monster Yamaha Tech 3's Johann Zarco.

He needed to finish 11th to ensure that nothing Dovizioso could do would make a difference and with 21 points to make up, the Italian knew that he had to win the race and hope for another mistake to end Marquez's race.

Marquez was assured he would retain the crown with six laps remaining of the Valencia Grand Prix when challenger Andrea Dovizioso crashed out of the race.

Three-time world champion Marquez tops the Moto GP World Standings with 129 points, just five points ahead of Maverick Viñales (Yamaha).

"This made the championship even more exciting".

The moment - which dropped him to fifth before the Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo crashed in front of him - was the result of pressure from Tech3's Johann Zarco, as he was "scared" to let the Frenchman try a potentially unsafe move.

I did, but the opportunity didn't come. "I am a more mature player, but also with better defensive reading, with more ability to concentrate".

Ducati's Jorge Lorenzo looked to be the only rider with the pace to topple Marquez, but will start fourth after crashing at the end of his first run at the final corner.

"I would like to congratulate Dovi and the Ducati team". "Let's see what we can do in the race, but we have just one strategy - try to win the race and wait on what Marc can do", he said.

"During the race I was trying to control the situation, but then I thought it was time to move because I felt really good".

"I'm disappointed he didn't finish the race today, because he was an incredible opponent, incredible person", said Marquez, who is now MotoGP's youngest-ever four-time world champion. This is a standard thing for Marc.

Pedrosa, another Honda rider, overtook Johann Zarco late in the race. "We fought for many races, especially with Andrea", Marquez told BT Sport.

"Johann was very strong all the race and it was very hard because he was going into the corner very fast".
