Bill Gates commits $100 million to fight Alzheimer's disease

Bill Gates investing $50M into research for Alzheimer's cure Bill Gates commits $100 million to fight Alzheimer's disease

"The human cost of Alzheimer's is much more hard to put into numbers", Gates wrote on his blog .

Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society charity, welcomed Gates' "significant personal investment", saying it would speed up progress toward a cure and help reduce stigma around dementia: "With Bill Gates now joining all those already united against dementia, there is new hope for advances in the care and cure of dementia", he said in a statement.

My family history isn't the sole reason behind my interest in Alzheimer's.

The donations are part of the Gates' and Warren Buffet's initiative, The Giving Pledge, which the couple started in 2010 to convince other billionaires to give away a majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes. I know how very bad it is to watch people you love struggle as the disease robs them of their mental capacity, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Although Alzheimer's now has no cure, Gates expressed hope that the course of Alzheimer's can be substantially altered if progress is made in five key areas.

In 2015, an estimated 46.8 million people worldwide lived with dementia, a number set to double every 20 years reaching 74.7 million in 2030 and 131.5 million in 2050, according to World Alzheimer's Report 2015.

Biden reveals reasons for abandoning presidential run, but will he be back?
Feldman also said Biden would likely face plenty of opposition from other Democratic candidates who are ready and willing to take on Donald Trump in 2020.

In a blog post, Mr. Gates outlined his reasons for donating, saying that Alzheimer's and dementia greatly reduce quality of life, take an extreme emotional toll on families and put an huge economic burden on the nation's health care system.

"Most of the major pharmaceutical companies continue to pursue the amyloid and tau pathways".

"In the first example of its kind in dementia, the DDF has now brought together funding from the private sector, charity and industry, and we're especially pleased to get so much interest from the USA in a British fund", said Kate Bingham, Managing Partner of SV. A more diverse approach, he believes, will increase the odds of finding one that works.

"The pace of innovation is partly determined by how quickly we can do clinical trials". He also tells that the disease is found in men in relation to women. "If we could develop a process to pre-qualify participants and create efficient registries, we could start new trials more quickly".

Although he told CNN a "cure" for Alzheimer's is "probably setting a high bar", it should be the long-term goal.

The Alzheimer's Association said Monday that it "applauds [Gates's] efforts to seek an end to Alzheimer's".
