In an email sent to CP24, Lyft spokesperson Daniel Moulton said the expansion will be bringing a "new affordable transportation option" to Toronto consumers.

The company, which is in the middle of closing a $1 billion round from Alphabet, has been in hyper growth mode this year, launching in at least 100 additional cities across the USA over the last few months.

Lyft, the $11 billion Uber rival, is beginning its worldwide expansion.

The Lyft app is now available to 95% of the population in the United States, up from 54% at the start of the year.

A spokesman confirmed that Uber will be unprofitable overall, although some cities may break even. The company announced it would be launching in Toronto, Canada by the end of this year.

Lyft has said it will launch its ride-hailing app in Toronto by the end of December, in its first global expansion outside the US. The company says it is now worth $11bn. Indeed, there have been reports since the start of the year that such plans were imminent.

Uber has 40 million customers worldwide.
