Now, those two SEALs have been placed on administrative leave and shipped to the United States from Mali, and are under investigation for killing Melgar.

Melgar, a staff sergeant in the Army's 3rd Special Forces Group, was specifically selected for an intelligence operation in the West African nation of Mali.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is probing the June 4 death of Army Staff Sgt. Logan Melgar and whether the elite sailors were responsible.

Now those two partners are under investigation for killing Melgar -after an autopsy came back that showed the 34-year-old had no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of his death.

Melgar, a Green Beret, was allegedly offered to join the racket in which the two Navy SEALs allegedly kept military money that was supposed to be used to pay informants.

And five members of the special-operations community have now said Melgar's death came after he had discovered the SEALs were pocketing money meant to pay local informants.

According to USA officials, he stopped breathing at around 5am and attempts to reopen his airway failed.

While Melgar's death could have been accidental, the subsequent SEAL cover-up detailed by The Daily Beast was clearly deliberate.

Two missing Chinese students in Canada may be victims of ransom scam
These people then contact the students' families in China, telling them their child has been kidnapped and demand a large ransom. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Xu is being asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.

When he confronted them about it, the sources say the pair told Melgar they could get him a cut of the money in return for his silence.

The SEALs at the center of the NCIS homicide investigation have not been identified or charged. He was rushed to a French clinic in Mali by another Green Beret and the two SEALs, but was already dead on arrival.

The country's elite fighting squads typically operate in the shadows, in far-flung countries, with little to no oversight, and despite the heroic image of the SEALs and other similar units purveyed by politicians and the media, there are strong suggestions their operations often have a dark side to them.

Melgar then passed out, and their efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

While the team's internal policies stringently precluded the shooting of unarmed individuals, and demanded a clear posthumous demonstration such targets had displayed hostile intent.

Representatives of both US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) declined requests from The Daily Beast for comment due to the active investigation.

In a development that has sent shockwaves through the special operations community, two members of the elite SEAL Team Six have since been accused of strangling their fellow U.S. serviceman.
