"He said something about, 'You know, you handle it very well, '" Duterte said, quoting Trump.

"The meeting was warm and cordial", Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque told a press briefing held at the International Media Center.

In other photos, Duterte was seen shaking hands with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and South Korean president Moon Jae-in.

"They were genuinely pleased to have finally met each other in person", Roque added.

"I would like to convey to you the gratitude of the Filipino people for your timely assistance, especially the trucks and the arms that you sent", President Duterte said. "We're even", the President had said, without naming the lawmakers.

In the photo, Duterte was at the back row, flanked by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

Duterte and Trump's bilateral dialogue did not push through in Vietnam.

Both Duterte and Trump said they were looking forward to their face-to-face meeting.

According to the Filipino news site Rappler, Duterte's boast was made to illustrate that he had no fear of going to jail for overseeing his government's rampage against suspected drug dealers and users, which has been widely criticized by human rights groups.
