World Diabetes Day is marked worldwide by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) on November 14, every year. But what is it exactly and what are the difference between the two types?

Though young people with type-2 diabetes do not need insulin to survive, they are at greater risk of life-threatening complications, such as kidney damage and heart disease, than people with insulin-dependent diabetes.

It is a condition caused by high levels of glucose - or sugar - in the blood.

Someone with exceptionally high levels of blood sugar might have blurred vision or feel tired, as well as have an increased thirst or hunger.

In people diagnosed with diabetes, their pancreas doesn't produce any insulin, or not enough insulin. Although temporary, there is an increased risk of developing diabetes in later years, for both mother and child.

What are the signs to look out for with diabetes?

Without it, your body doesn't get the energy it needs from the glucose you eat.

In reaction to the rise in cases of Diabetes worldwide, it was made a decision to choose a day of the year to raise awareness of Diabetes and related causes. Without insulin, sugar builds up in the blood instead of being used for energy.

A diet high in green leafy vegetables can reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Here are 10 healthy foods to include in one's diet for those who are taking baby steps towards avoiding diabetes.

Often, women tend to overlook their own needs and requirements giving preference to the work and family.

Type 2 diabetes usually develops in middle-aged or older people, but there has been a rise in cases among young, overweight people.

More than anything else we as a people are put to ease with the thought that no single disease is being given precedence over the other and all are being tackled with the same amount of effort to promote education, early detection, prevention and management and in some cases eradication of the diseases in Ghana.

And the condition is becoming more prevalent in children, teenagers of all ethnicities.

The theme for this year is "Women and Diabetes".

Type 2 is far more common than type 1, but is still rare in childhood. You depend on that insulin and you just build that routine into your daily life.

This form of the disease typically occurs in childhood, or before the age of 40 and is not linked to obesity.

Diabetes has come to be one of the most dreaded offshoots of modern and hectic lifestyles. She has recently revealed that she has to inject herself with insulin up to five times a day to manage her condition.

Long live the fourth republic and may Ghana and all her citizens enjoy the best of health as our fight against diabetes rages on.

This medication is created to lower blood sugar levels, but can not cure the disease. At present, there is no cure for diabetes.
