GameStop Temporarily Suspends Unlimited Used Games Power Pass Program

It remains unclear exactly why the PowerPass program is being halted so close to its launch, especially since it was obviously a major part of GameStop's holiday season plans. After those six months are up, the last game that you have "out" is yours to keep.

Since then, GameStop itself has confirmed the delay, saying that it has made a decision to "temporarily pause" the PowerPass service due to "a few program limitations we have identified".

The subscription is only available for GameStop Power-Up Rewards members, but that's not much of a stumbling block: While there are paid tiers that offer additional benefits, there's also a free base tier. "We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exception service". According to multiple employees and a spokesperson for GameStop, the heavily anticipated service has hit several snags ahead of its launch, and will now be suspended indefinitely. If unfamiliar, this program would cost $60 and would allow customers to rent as many used games as they would like within a six-month span, with customers getting to choose one of the games they rented to keep permanently, at the end of the subscription.

Sensex down 30 points, Nifty trades at 10212
L&T, HDFC twins, Infosys, ITC pushed the market lower; but Reliance Industries (up 1.3 percent) and auto stocks capped losses. The top gainer on both indices was Hero MotoCorp, whose share prices rose 2.1% on the Nifty and 1.96% on the Sensex.

Update: Asked for comment, GameStop replied to Polygon with this statement.

"For those guests who have already purchased the service, we will allow them to bring the pass, and video game they have checked-out, back to receive a full refund", the GameStop representative added.

GameStop PowerPass isn't quite ready for showtime. Still, even in areas with poor download speeds or rampant data caps from ISPs, customers might be inclined to order new games from Amazon rather than go to a retail outlet. When Kotaku reached out to GameStop about the suspension, the company said "program limitations" were largely to blame. Along similar lines, Nintendo is set to launch a Netflix-like service for classic retro games on its Switch platform in 2018.
