Jacqui Lambie confirms she will resign over dual citizenship

Jacqui Lambie could quit within 24 hours Citizenship saga: Senator Jacqui Lambie could be the next to leave Parliament

The Attorney-General warns the onus is now on Bill Shorten to live by the same standard he has demanded of the government when it comes to the dual-citizenship debacle.

The Jacqui Lambie Network's Queensland candidate was forced withdraw because of the same issue now threatening to bring down the Senator.

Senator Lambie, whose father was born in Scotland, has been checking with the British government after concerns were raised about her status and had already warned parliamentary colleagues that she would likely be leaving.

At the time, Senator Lambie said she was proud of her Scottish heritage, and had learned more about her father's family history in recent weeks while researching her forthcoming autobiography. However she is awaiting confirmation from British Authorities.

Lambie has growing fears she is a dual-national despite both her parents holding Australian passports, and confirmed to Fairfax she would quiet immediately should that be proven true.

Lambie's departure follows the resignations of five fellow senators; the Greens Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters; the deputy leader of the National party, Fiona Nash; One Nation's Malcolm Roberts; and the Senate president, the Liberal Stephen Parry.

On Tuesday, she told Tasmanian radio station LAFM Launceston it was "quite clear" she held dual citizenship and said she would officially quit the Senate shortly after midday.

Government backbencher John Alexander resigned on the weekend because he is a dual UK-Australian citizen, but he'll contest a by-election for his old seat of Bennelong on December 16.

Senator Lambie is not expected to comment publicly on her citizenship status today and has moved to dismiss speculation she could resign, but reportedly said that if she was found to be a dual citizen that "Tasmanians will be the first to know".

Senator Lambie had previously released a statement saying she was satisfied her parents were both Australian citizens.

"I'd certainly have a good look at it, I just have to see what else is going on", she said.

The two major parties have only today struck a deal on how to deal with MP's citizenship disclosures.
