New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern slams 'unacceptable' Manus Island situation

How can the crisis on Manus Island be resolved? Ardern planning 'substantive' Manus talks

The Prime Minister acknowledges she could be seen as an irritant to the Australians over her persistence on resettling the Manus Island refugees.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has condemned Australia for failing to resolve the refugee crisis now unfolding on Manus Island.

Ms Ardern will be pressing Mr Turnbull again to accept New Zealand's offer to take 150 refugees from both Manus Island and Nauru.

The camp inside a Manus Island navy base was declared closed October 31 based on the Papua New Guinea Supreme Court's ruling previous year that Australia's policy of housing asylum seekers there was unconstitutional. No matter what label you put on it there is absolute need and there is harm being done, ' she said on Sunday.

Hundreds of migrants who attempted to reach Australia defied a Monday deadline to leave a decommissioned immigration camp on Papua New Guinea, where many hold out hope of starting new lives in the United States, police said.

But National's foreign affairs spokesman Gerry Brownlee said it was "surprising she's made a decision to go so hard on the Australians".

"People will die when that happens".

Government frontbencher Matt Canavan criticised the genuineness of the offer.

Speaking at the APEC Summit in Vietnam on Saturday local time, the Prime Minister of New Zealand said the unfolding stand-off between refugees and PNG immigration officials was unacceptable.

Mr Turnbull had a meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday morning in Manila and the pair will share dinner together where the US offer to accept 1250 refugees - agreed by former president Barack Obama - is likely to come up.

Newshub has been briefed on the deal and can reveal that Ms Ardern is happy for Australia to place an order on any refugees that they can never travel there.
