"From my perspective, I'm not really too concerned about what someone's motive is".
As a friend and neighbor of the Paul family, I have been disturbed by the inaccuracies in numerous media accounts of the assault that occurred on Friday, November 3rd.
Rumors have continued to make the rounds in Paul's well-to-do gated community about why his longtime neighbor Rene Boucher would tackle him but very little has been released about the attack. Porter said Paul was wearing ear protection, so he did not hear the attack coming.
Boucher has pleaded not guilty to fourth-degree assault, but federal charges may be coming if it is determined that Paul was attacked for his political views. An attorney for Boucher issued a statement saying an altercation between the two men was brought on by a "trivial" dispute and was unrelated to politics. "There is no motive that would justify hitting somebody from behind and breaking their ribs and damaging their lungs, so no, there is no justification for something like that".
"As to reports of a longstanding dispute with the attacker, the Pauls have had no conversations with him in many years", said Doug Stafford, an adviser in Paul's office, adding the first time they'd talked recently was when Paul's ribs were broken. "We've never had words over anything, we've never had a dispute or discussion or word".
Paul's office has dismissed the accusations about property rights and yard waste as the cause behind the incident and said the senator was blindsided and attacked.
