Mumbai: According to the recent reports, unidentified Robbers on Monday in Navi Mumbai have dug up a 25-foot tunnel into Bank of Baroda, had fled away with Rs 1 crore in cash along with other valuables from at least 30 lockers from the Juinagar Branch.
The robbery is believed to have taken place at a branch of Bank of Baroda in the Juninagar area near Navi Mumbai early Sunday. Their modus operandi - digging a tunnel through an adjacent shop, much like in Shawshank Redemption where the protagonist stages a prison-break by digging a tunnel. Around a month ago, Mr. Prasad, who had rented the space from owner Sharad Kothavle, told the owner that he was going to his home town, and two employees would manage the shop in the meantime. When the customer and a bank officer entered the locker room, they found that 27 lockers had been looted.
The Bank of Baroda branch occupies shops one to four in Bhakti Residency, opposite Juinagar Railway Station in Sector 11, with the fourth shop housing the ATM cubicle and locker room. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Tushar Doshi said it is "impossible to dig a tunnel ending exactly under the locker room without knowing the bank's layout". "However, there were none inside the locker room to respect the privacy of customers", said Kiran Patil, assistant commissioner of police (Nerul) division. Of 237 lockers, 30 lockers were found open.
The tenant has been missing ever since the incident came to light, police said, adding that in such cases, people give out fake names and identity proofs. The bank had called all its customers to following the robbery for assessment of the robbery.
