SHOCK: More Than Half of California Pregnancies Unintended

US top court to hear dispute over California pregnancy center law SCOTUS Takes Up Free Speech Dispute Over Calif. Abortion Law
Kenny Thornton | 14 November, 2017, 03:04

The pro-life centers asked the Supreme Court to hear their case after the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against them past year. "Information about abortion is just about everywhere, so the government doesn't need to punish pro-life centers for declining to advertise for the very act they can't promote".

The decision marks the first time the country's highest court will hear an abortion-related case during the Trump administration.

The challengers say the law violates the First amendment because it forces the faith-based pregnancy centers to send a message that conflicts with their aim of encouraging childbirth, not abortion.

Last month a California Superior Court Justice put a halt to the law with a permanent injunction, ruling that the state can not force pro-life pregnancy centers to post signage promoting state-covered abortions to their clients. They are typically run by groups with strong anti-abortion views.

The US Supreme Court agreed on Monday to examine a California law that obliges private anti-abortion agencies to tell pregnant clients they can get a publicly-financed abortion and contraception.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra will be defending the law.

"California has a substantial interest in the health of its citizens, including ensuring that its citizens have access to and adequate information about constitutionally protected medical services like abortion", Judge Dorothy W. Nelson wrote for the panel in upholding the requirement that licensed clinics post a notice about abortion.

Hodgson would like to sign three players in January to help Palace escape their current rut as they prepare relegation battle. The Scandinavians won the first leg 1-0 and the decider is at San Siro on Monday at 19.45 GMT.

According to the State of California, more than half of pregnancies in the state are unintended.

The law applies to facilities "whose primary goal is providing family planning or pregnancy-related services". "It does not contain any more speech than necessary, nor does it encourage, suggest, or imply that women should use those state-funded services".

The Christian and conservative groups behind this appeal contend that the law violates the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

In 2015, the justices left in place a lower court ruling that struck down North Carolina's law requiring physicians to perform an ultrasound, display the sonogram and describe the fetus to women seeking an abortion.

Pro-life advocates who have opposed the law, including The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA), praised the Supreme Court for deciding to hear what it called a "critical free speech case".

The 8th Circuit, in St. Louis, upheld the law.
