West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday expressed happiness over the state having been awarded with Geographical Indication (GI) status for its iconic sweet, Rosogolla.
When contacted, Head of office of Geographical Indications Intellectual Property India Chinnaraja G. Naidu confirmed that the GI tag had been given to both. "We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI. status for Rosogolla", Banerjee tweeted.
The first committee would look into facts and evidence regarding the origin of Rasgulla in Odisha, the second would study the ground, based on which West Bengal is making its claim.
Odisha had claimed that the sweetmeat originated from the Jagannath Temple in Puri, where it is a part of the religious rituals since the 12th century.
