Miller told Federal Bureau of Investigation agents she became interested in plant-based poisons during the past summer.

The alleged poisonings were uncovered earlier this week when Ms Miller drove herself to a local medical centre to be evaluated.

"She stated that she manufactured ricin in the kitchen of her Wake Robin residence and, to test its potency, placed the ricin in the food or beverages of other residents".

Miller, who is scheduled to make an initial appearance at federal court in Burlington Friday, is now in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Miller allegedly told investigators and state health officials that she attempted to poison other Wake Robin residents using the homemade ricin.

Officers discovered a bottle labeled "ricin" in her residence at the facility, and the Vermont Forensic Lab determined it tested positive for the toxin, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

Investigators said Miller printed the ricin-making instructions from the internet.

She told investigators that she learned how to make ricin on the internet and harvested about 30 or 40 castor beans on the property of the community. He said Miller indicated she generated between 2 and 3 tablespoons of ricin on two occasions in the kitchen at her residence.

"Ms. Miller indicated her goal was to injure herself, but she wanted to test the effectiveness of the ricin on others", Emmons wrote.

State health officials say no one is now ill with ricin poisoning, but that their investigation has revealed one Wake Robin resident reported becoming ill recently.

No one had apparently been killed by Betty Miller's activities at the bucolic Wake Robin retirement home in Shelburne, Vermont, which advertises a population of "vibrant, engaged people and a community in which you can be yourself".

However, she sought to test the effectiveness of the plant-based poison on others in her care home. By her own admission, she administered those substances to other residents in order to test their efficacy.

Truman said department officials continue to work closely with Wake Robin administrators to ensure the health and safety of residents. The affidavit does not state why she went to the hospital.
