Egypt's foreign minister says no restrictions on presidential hopeful

Update: Former Egyptian PM Ahmed Shafiq left Emirates to Cairo: UAE news agency Presidential hopeful Shafiq 'detained' in Cairo after UAE deportation

UAE officials on Saturday deported former Egyptian premier and presidential hopeful Ahmed Shafiq from the Gulf country he had been living in since 2012 to Egypt after he announced his candidacy in upcoming elections, two of his aides told AFP.

He was placed on trial after the polls on corruption charges and acquitted, and one of Shafiq's lawyers said a year ago that he was free to return to Egypt.

Shafiq's lawyer Dina Adly said earlier on Saturday in an online statement that Shafiq was arrested at his home and was put on a private plane back to Cairo.

After he announced his candidacy on Wednesday, pro-government media and some officials assailed Shafiq, who is seen as the only challenger to Sisi with even a remote chance of winning a large number of votes.

A Reuters witness at the airport said Egyptian authorities escorted Shafik in a motorcade that was waiting for him outside the airport.

She said all lines of communication with him have been cut.

He announced from the UAE last week he would return to Egypt to run in the upcoming presidential elections.

Shafiq left the UAE for Cairo following his detention, Emirates News Agency (ENA), official news agency of UAE, reported earlier.

President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi is widely expected to run for a second term but has yet to announce it. The UAE denied Shafiq's claims.

However, Shafiq's family is still in the UAE, said an unnamed official source cited in the ENA report. Earlier last month, uman rights lawyer and former 2012 presidential candidate Khaled Ali declared his own intention to become a candidate for president.

Following the outbreak of the 25 January Revolution, he was appointed prime minister by former President Hosni Mubarak on January 29, 2011 until March 3, 2011.

Shafiq narrowly lost the June 2012 presidential elections to the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi, who held the office for one year before he was ousted in July 2013 following nationwide protests against his rule.
