In a recent announcement, Instagram stated that it's going to add content warnings to any selfies with wildlife, including tigers and koalas. But wildlife conservation groups stated that these tourist attractions mistreat animals.

Instagram will begin to issue warnings about taking selfies with animals.

"With its community of over 800 million users, Instagram has the platform to change the conversation around the use of animals as photo props". Instead, the new warning is meant to educate users about their interactions with the environment.

"You are searching for a hashtag that may be associated with posts that encourage harmful behavior to animals or to the environment", the warning reads in part, alongside a link to more information about wildlife exploitation. Now, they want you to know that your selfie with a sedated monkey also likely qualifies as animal abuse, no matter how cute you both look. These types of photos have become hard to avoid on social media, where postings have increased by 292 percent since 2014, according to World Animal Protection. Just a couple months ago, we shared World Animal Protection's new "Wildlife Selfie Code" campaign that urged people to never take a selfie with a wild animal.

I think it's important for the community right now to be more aware. In August, a baby dolphin died in Spain while being passed around by tourists to take a selfie.

Celebrities including socialite Paris Hilton and reality start Khloe Kardashian have been roundly criticised for posing for pictures with chimpanzees and orangutans at private zoos by the UN's Great Apes Survival Partnership, who branded them "chumps with chimps" a year ago.

WAP chief executive Steve McIvor said: "We congratulate Instagram on taking this important step towards educating its users about wild animals that are suffering for selfies". Kardashian and her half-sister, model Kendal Jenner, are also regular visitors to the Black Jaguar-White Tiger animal rescue foundation, which houses exotic animals including pumas, lions and jaguars.
