Philippines Suspends Sale of Dengvaxia Dengue Vaccine Over Risk to Patients

Philippines government investigates Dengvaxia dengue vaccine Dengue Vaccine Controversy

The Philippines banned a government program, which involved immunizing children with Dengvaxia after releasing Sanofi's findings. Sanofi shares slid more than 1 percent on Tuesday to a 10-month low.

Congress and the Department of Justice have set investigations, but both will have to rely on information from health experts as a review and more research are conducted on the safety and efficacy of a vaccine against dengue. The WHO Country Office said this position paper was "based on recommendations of the Strategic Group of Experts on Immunisation which met and published preliminary advice in mid-April 2016".

On the impact of issues surrounding the vaccine in Brazil and the Philippines, the spokesperson said, "Sanofi Pasteur has taken action to transparently share this new data with the health authorities in the countries where the vaccine is in use today or where it is now being considered for regulatory approval". Moreover, the drug manufacturer needed to report any incidence that caused serious illness or death due to Dengvaxia.

On Nov. 29, the company disclosed that it would ask global health regulators to restrict use of its much-touted dengue vaccine to only people who have previously been infected by the virus.

Citing results of an assay test co-developed with the University of Pittsburgh, a Sanofi Pasteur India spokesperson told PTI, "For those not previously infected by dengue virus, the analysis found, in the longer term, more cases of severe disease could occur following vaccination upon a subsequent dengue infection".

Former governor Mikheil Saakashvili 'forces entry' to Ukraine
Saakashvili fell out with Poroshenko over accusations that Kiev was failing to make good on the fight against corruption. But he quit that office in 2016, complaining that his efforts to root out corruption suffered official obstruction.

The Philippines was the first country to launch a major vaccination campaign with Dengvaxia, the world's first dengue vaccine.

As of November 2017, about 733,713 Filipino children have been given the anti-dengue vaccine.

The Department of Health has recommended that she be moved to a Manila hospital for closer monitoring, but Bayugo said she had shown signs of improvement with her platelet count recovering.

Dengvaxia is the first approved dengue vaccine, and generates approximately $1 billion in sales every year for Sanofi. But even recent more modest analysts' sales forecasts are now looking unattainable given the safety issue and clinical evidence revealing unequal protection against different strains of dengue.

The country's public immunization program was suspended on Friday.
