USA soccer fans rejoice over news that Sunil Gulati won't seek re-election

US soccer president will not seek re-election REPORT: Sunil Gulati will not run for another term as US Soccer president

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati announced Monday he will not seek re-election in February.

The business side of U.S. Soccer certainly expanded during Gulati's tenure-though much of that is due to CEO Dan Flynn.

There hasn't been a contested U.S. Soccer presidential election since 1998, but with Gulati out of the race you can be certain that it will be a wild next couple of months.

Even without Gulati at the head, the USA will still seek to obtain the rights to host the 2026 World Cup. But the failure in October of the United States national team to qualify for next summer's World Cup in Russian Federation - a crushing disappointment to the team, to Gulati and especially for fans who had come to expect its quadrennial presence in the tournament - allowed long-simmering complaints about Gulati's leadership and his style to burst into public view.

But after decades of operation, the "attitude control thrusters" that turn the spacecraft by firing tiny "puffs" had degraded. The engineers fired up the thrusters on Tuesday and tested their ability to turn Voyager using 10-millisecond pulses.

Gulati declined to endorse any of the candidates in his interview with ESPN, telling Borden that none of the other candidates' candidacies made a serious impact on his own choice to bow out. "I think several of them would be in for a pretty big shock about what the job is - it's not just about national teams".

Football in the United States is still reeling from the country's shock World Cup qualifying exit, when Bruce Arena's side lost to Trinidad and Tobago in their final game to miss out on Russian Federation 2018. (The USSF presidency has paid him nothing.) Also, Gulati will potentially head the organizing committee for World Cup 2026 if the combined USA-Mexico-Canada bid beats Morocco to win the hosting rights next June 13 in Moscow. Those candidates include former U.S. players Kyle Martino, Eric Wynalda and Paul Caligiuri, U.S. Soccer vice president Carlos Cordeiro, lawyer Michael Winograd, Massachusetts youth soccer official Paul LaPointe and lawyer Steve Gans. It's about 4 million registered players, referees, medical safety, grass-roots stuff.

Kathy Carter, the head of the USSF's marketing partner Soccer United Marketing (SUM) is also reported to be mulling a run.

Carter would replace Gulati in the field of eight candidates, should she decide to run, and she would be the only female in contention for the position.
