Three men were charged Tuesday with the murder of campaigning Maltese journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia, killed in a horrific auto bombing on the Mediterranean island on October 16.

During Monday's announcement of the arrests, Muscat said a joint team of police, military and security services swooped following a almost seven-week investigation carried out with help from the FBI, Europol and Finnish intelligence.

Caruana Galizia's son Matthew, who is also a reporter, told the Guardian his family were "in the dark" about the arrests and had been given no further information beyond a phone call from a magistrate's office after the arrests were made public.

They were the first known break in a crime that shocked Malta and motivated European Union officials to look into the EU island nation's laws and government.

They were charged with manufacturing the bomb, with killing the journalist, with taking part in organised crime, as well as possession of explosives.

All the suspects were Maltese nationals, Muscat's statement added.

Last week, a visiting delegation of European Parliament lawmakers left the island expressing concerns over the rule of law in the country and issued a warning that the "perception of impunity in Malta can not continue".

Malta's government offered a $US 1.2 million reward for pertinent information. Muscat claimed there was a "reasonable suspicion" the detained were involved in the murder. Caruana Galizia wrote about some of those linked to the inquiry.

The victim's husband, Peter Caruana Galizia, was among those who attended the hearing in Malta's capital Valletta. The other seven have been released on police bail pending a probe of other evidence.

With a career spanning more than three decades, she was "one of Malta's most important, visible, fearless journalists", in the words of former Home Affairs Minister Louis Galea.

Antonio Di Pietro, an Italian politician and judge who was a prosecutor in Italy's anti-corruption Mani Pulite corruption trials in the 1990s, said on Monday that Caruana Galizia's murder had all the hallmarks of a mafia-style killing.

"Eight of the world's largest media organizations - including The New York Times and the BBC - have demanded the killers be brought to justice".

"The eyes of Europe are on the Maltese authorities", Timmermans said.
