The U.S. Senate confirmed Kirstjen Nielsen as secretary of homeland security on a 62 to 37 vote Tuesday. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), who voted against confirming Nielsen.

Sens. Chris Coons (D-Del.), Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), Mark Warner (D-Va.) were among those who voted alongside their Republican colleagues to confirm the former principal deputy to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly as the new DHS secretary.

Nielsen's "work in and around the department since its creation, as well as her knowledge of cybersecurity, risk management and critical infrastructure, should serve her well in confronting the daunting threats to our homeland", said Sen.

Kirstjen Nielsen, a top White House aide considered to be a cybersecurity expert, will now lead the DHS.

"It has been an honor to serve as the Department's Acting Secretary, and I look forward to working alongside Ms. Nielsen as her deputy as we continue to carry out the DHS mission of safeguarding the American people, our homeland, and our values", she said in a statement.

In January, soon after Trump took office, senators confirmed Kelly 88 to 11. She served as Kelly's chief of staff at DHS and eventually moved with him to the White House, serving as deputy chief of staff.

If Porto finish level on points with Leipzig, the Portuguese side will qualify due to their better head-to-head record. CSKA Moscow and Basel both have 9 points at this moment in time, and the final fixtures on Tuesday evening are tasty.

Several Democrats expressed concerns over Nielsen's close relationship with the White House and potential political interference from the administration. Ms. Duke has said she would remain at the department in the No. 2 position, tamping down speculation that she might resign after Ms. Nielsen was installed. Kamala Harris, Calif., cited similar doubts about Nielsen's independence.

Nielsen said at her confirmation hearing last month that climate change is a "crucial issue", noting the Trump administration is revising its climate models to better respond to rising sea level, but said the human impact on climate change is not fully understood.

As the top official leading the DHS, an agency with a $40 billion discretionary budget and 240,000 employees, Nielsen will take on a broad array of responsibilities. During her confirmation hearing, she told senators she learned key lessons about emergency management by having a front-row seat to the botched response to Hurricane Katrina.

"There is no need for a wall from sea to shining sea", Nielsen said.
