A top immigration official says people living in the country illegally have good reason to be anxious about getting deported under President Donald Trump.

The new numbers, which offer the most complete snapshot yet of immigration enforcement under Trump, show that Border Patrol arrests plunged to a 45-year low in the fiscal year that ended September 30, with far fewer people being apprehended between official border crossings.

Trump administration officials said despite the lower numbers of people arrested at the border, Trump's proposed wall along the US-Mexico border is still needed.

Figures released by the Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday show Trump is delivering on his pledge to more strictly control immigration and suggest that would-be immigrants are getting the message to not even think about crossing the border illegally.

Despite the overall decline in border arrests, the numbers have increased every month since May - largely families and unaccompanied children.

In the fiscal year to September 30, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), one of two key DHS immigration enforcement agencies, arrested 143,470 people it said were in the country illegally, 30 percent more than the previous year.

CBP Acting Deputy Commissioner Ronald Vitiello said that the agency was now studying prototypes for the wall Trump has ordered for the almost 2,000-mile (3,200 kilometer) border with Mexico.

But, ICE arrests between January and September rose by a staggering 42 percent compared to the previous year, with the agency putting almost 111,000 people behind the bars.

"We conduct target enforcement operations, we know exactly who we are going to arrest and where", he said.

At a news conference, Thomas Homan, acting director of ICE, dismissed complaints from immigration advocates about the rollback of Obama administration policies that had led to a sharp drop in interior arrests.

About 58 per cent of Border Patrol arrests were people from countries other than Mexico - up from 54 per cent a year earlier - largely from Central America. That was down 23.7 per cent from the previous year.

Ronald Vitiello, Customs and Border Protection's acting deputy commissioner, said he was "very concerned" about increases in families and children crossing in recent months. During the fiscal year, which included the President Barack Obama administration's final months, border authorities stopped people travelling as families 104,997 times on the Mexican border and unaccompanied children 48,681 times.
