Snow will cause travel issues Thursday

Cold December Start to Fuel Several Eastern Snow Chances This Week, Including Heavy Lake-Effect Near Buffalo High impact lake-effect snow to bring up to 2 ft. for some
Kenny Thornton | 07 December, 2017, 12:53

Heavy lake-effect snow is expected to develop this week as a blast of Arctic air spreads across the Great Lakes and Northeast causing localized whiteouts and more than two feet of snow in some areas. In addition, we do see clouds and a little moisture setting up in far southern OH, south of United States 50, and that can bring some minor snows as well.

At this point it appears that the most significant lake snow will fall during the day and this evening east and northeast of Lake Ontario (well north of Syracuse).

The weekend should start quiet with clouds increasing Saturday in advance of a cold front which is slated to move through Saturday night with some snow showers and flurries. The best precipitation chances next week come Thursday with snow, about 24 hours later than our previous forecast.

The relatively mild weather we've seen over the last couple of days is going away.

Snows are back on Monday. So, we will keep chances for accumulating snow with the eve4nt, but move it to Thursday instead of Wednesday. But...we will see how the system progresses.

There are also chances for snow in other parts of the East this week, though a major storm is not in the forecast at this time. Then Monday night through Tuesday, we see the snow intensity drop, but coverage expands to almost 75% of the state seeing some kind of snowflake action for the period through Tuesday. The day is expected to be mostly dry with highs in the upper-30s. This is just a cold pattern, and the cold is leading to better chances of light snow. We see scattered little bits of action here and there, more nuisance than anything else but it adds up. High 43F. Winds WSW at 10 to 15 miles per hour.

In the extended period, we still see nothing spectacular until we get closer to the 18th and 19th.
