Trump tells NASA to send Americans to Moon

President Donald Trump signed a directive that United States will begin a process to return Americans to the moon. "This work represents a national effort on many fronts, with America leading the way". Obama's policy focused instead on sending astronauts beyond the Moon to deep space and potentially an asteroid by 2025, and to orbit Mars by the mid-2030s.

Trump's plan partially revolves around using the moon as a jumping-off point to get to Mars, though the directive vaguely adds that it's also "of interest to global partners and is within reach of America's private space industry".

Trump signed the space policy on Monday, which also marked the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 17 mission, which was the last time humans walked on the moon. "The U.S. commercial space industry has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in private capital to develop innovative capabilities for lunar transport, operations and resource utilization". Politico reports that Trump's Mars mission won't be run entirely by NASA-instead, "the agency would enlist worldwide partners and a new class of billionaire-run private space juggernauts to help pull it off".

The president did not mention how much the envisioned moon program might cost, when astronauts might plant their feet in the lunar soil or when an eventual Mars mission might be launched.

Nasa said it will need more money to make these new plans happen. "Going back to the moon as the precursor to further exploration will enable NASA to test new systems and equipment critical for future missions, like the human exploration of Mars". We congratulate the Trump administration on its bold vision and commitment to American leadership in space.

On Monday, Gidley asserted that the president's directive "will change our nation's human spaceflight policy to help America become the driving force for the space industry, gain new knowledge from the cosmos, and spur incredible technology". I think he should stay there, just to be safe.

Mr Trump has signed a policy directive instructing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to "refocus America's space program on human exploration and discovery".

Pence echoed the president's vow, saying "you're ensuring that America will lead in space once again".
