Google on Tuesday marked the 96th birth anniversary of Indian-American Nobel Prize-holder and biochemist Dr. Har Gobind Khorana, with a honest doodle.

A second scientific breakthrough would come a few years later when Khorana reported construction of the first artificial gene, which are widely used in biology labs for sequencing, cloning and engineering new plants and animals.

The researcher shared the 1968 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert W. Holley for research that showed how the order of nucleotides in nucleic acids, which carry the genetic code of the cell, control the cell's synthesis of proteins. He then moved to England for his Ph.D. programme at the University of Liverpool.

He had served on the faculty of the University of British Columbia from 1952 to 1960, where he initiated his Nobel Prize winning work.

The Nobel Prize was awarded for the scientists' discovery that the order of nucleotides in our DNA that finds out which amino acids are built.

Dr Khorana contributed immensely building different RNA chains with the help of enzymes to be able to produce proteins. There, he decoded how cells read the language of RNA written in structures represented by the letters A, C, U, and G. He did this by using enzymes to create sequences of these letters.

Har Gobind Khorana was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan. Proteins are responsible for basic form and functions. Khorana was also the first scientist to chemically synthesize oligonucleotides. In 1978, he was elected as Foreign Member of the Royal Society. After living a worthy life, he died in 2011 aged 89 in Concord, Massachusetts.
