A French watchdog agency has launched a probe into whether Apple deliberately phased out older iPhones to force customers to upgrade to a newer model, according to global media outlets.

The probe comes in the wake of a complaint filed by a consumer organization, a judicial source was quoted as saying.

-Apple said last month that it "takes some measures to reduce power demands" in older iPhone models which can affect processor performance, Reuters reports.

Despite the reassurances from Apple, French consumer watchdog DGCCRF launched an investigation on Friday 5 January looking into alleged deception and planned obsolescence of its products following complaints from a consumer organisation. Many iPhone owners are less than impressed with Apple's explanation and the company is now facing a number of lawsuits in the US.

HOP accused the company of "the practice of planned obsolescence with the aim of deliberately reducing the lifespan [of a product] in order to increase the replacement rate", it said in a statement.

Amazon has confirmed the new gadgets and placed special emphasis on how this will be the first smart glasses with Alexa. In typical Vuzix fashion, there's a floating screen running Android, offering visual assistance to your voice commands.

The group alleges that Apple has "deliberately" slowed down some iPhone models through a software update, and claims it did so to coincide with the release of the newer iPhone 8 and iPhone X. "Our goal has always been to create products that our customers love, and making iPhones last as long as possible is an important part of that".

It has admitted slowing its flagship iPhones phones down, but says this was meant to extend their battery life. "While these changes may go unnoticed, in some cases users may experience longer launch times for apps and other reductions in performance".

"We are hoping to get some answers on whether Apple intentionally restricted the performance of old iPhones and tried to hide this from customers", said the Korea Communications Commission.

Reuters reported the preliminary investigation could take a number of months and will either be dropped or passed on to a judge for further investigation, depending on the findings.
