The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the time table for the 2019 general elections.
He said in Abuja that the dates for the National Assembly and Presidential elections remain February 16, 2019; while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections, will hold on March 2, 2019.
Governorship and state assembly elections will also hold same day on March 2, two weeks after the presidential election.
The INEC boss said the last day for the submission of nomination forms by political parties for the presidential and National Assembly is December 3, 2018 while for governorship and House of Assembly is December 17.
However, after the primaries, campaigns only start formally on November 18, INEC said. Mahmood Yakubu, who announced the guidelines during a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, also directed political parties to conclude all primary elections by October.
"We advised political parties to play by the rules, because we will ensure that we deliver free, fair and credible election, which is now a minimum benchmark for INEC in any election we conduct", he said.
In his words: "The number of political parties is good for plural democracy however political parties must cooperate with the commission for a successful election".
All the duly filled forms for Presidential and National Assembly candidates are to be submitted latest by October 18 and forms for governorship and state assemblies to be sent in by November 2.
Mr. Yakubu said that the INEC would on January 2, 2019 publish notice of the polls, and on January 7, 2019 publish official register of voters for the election.
He assured Nigerians that the commission is up to the task despite the enormous challenges of providing ballot papers for a projected 80 million registered voters, ad hoc staff and the requirements for forward and reverse logistics, monitoring of political parties primaries, electioneering campaign among other.
He added that the commission needed the support and cooperation of all stakeholders to succeed, saying the commission expects full adherence to the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act which formed basis of the timetable.
With exactly 402 days to the opening of polling units nationwide for the 2019 general elections, Nigeria's apex electoral body, INEC, has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the conduct of elections.
Meanwhile, the commission said it will still go ahead with Saturday's Anambra Central senatorial rerun election despite a Federal High Court judgement that ordered for the swearing-in of a PDP candidate.
He also said the commission would this week issue registration certificates to new political parties.
