Honda Insight hybrid to debut in Detroit, promises 50 mpg combined
Roomy and with the latest technology onboard the 2019 Honda Insight aims to offer a premium compact experience above the best-selling Civic

The Japanese auto giant had already confirmed the Insight name was going to be resurrected, again, but now it has released official images of a new Insight prototype that looks to be pretty close to a production-ready model. Since then, we've known to expect a new vehicle with fresh styling, premium features and improved performance.
The new Insight continues Honda's goal of electrifying two-thirds of its global models by 2030.
Available luxuries will include perforated leather seating, an eight-inch head unit with capacitive touchscreen and a seven-inch digital instrument panel.
Where the new Insight differs from the previous models with that name is that it is described by Honda as a "premium compact", and it will sit above the smaller Civic in the company's range. The hybrid batteries located under the rear seats provides for a full-size trunk with the flexibility of available 60/40 split and folding rear seats, according to Honda.
Inside, Honda is promising best-in-class passenger space, along with a more upscale cabin than most compact cars.
On EX and higher trims, the Insight will come standard with the Honda Sensing group of safety technologies, including adaptive cruise control with low-speed following capability, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, Road Departure Mitigation (which helps keep the auto on the road), and traffic sign recognition capability.
The car's equipment will also reflect its premium position in the market, with the very latest in infotainment, connectivity and driver-assistance systems.
The parts coming from outside the USA likely include the hybrid powertrain, which is similar to that used in the 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, which went on sale in December.
The new Insight will feature a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine paired with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. Therefore, if Honda fully implements this drivetrain in the new Civic-based Insight, which is likely 700-800 lbs. lighter, performance should be robust. "The Honda Insight is anticipated to receive fuel economy ratings competitive with the best hybrids in the segment, with styling that will have universal appeal inside and out and best-in-class passenger volume". No word yet on whether there will be a plug-in version. Most of the time, Honda says, the Insight will use the electric motor alone, relying on power from the batteries or, if they're depleted, starting up the gas engine to act as a mobile generator.
