People in the North East and North Yorkshire with medical treatment booked have been told to turn up for it unless they hear otherwise.

British Prime Minister Theresa May told Sky News on Wednesday that she recognizes that the cancellations are "disappointing" and "frustrating" for those affected.

BMA representative body chair Anthea Mowat said: 'What is happening in our A&Es is symptomatic of pressures across the entire system.

'I came on to shift yesterday afternoon and there were patients literally everywhere, ' he said. "The staff are doing all they can". And GPs are very anxious about patient safety and putting themselves in a professionally compromising situation - that is a significant concern for GPs these days.

NHS Providers director of policy and strategy Saffron Cordery said: "The NHS has prepared for winter as never before, and now it is clear those plans are really being put to the test".

Volunteers have been drafted in to staff a struggling hospital emergency department.

"For staff, an Emergency Department feels like a battlefield".

Mark Nevinson, a nurse at James Cook Hospital, tweeted that he was "ashamed of the substandard care we are now offering".

Similar to trusts in England, NHS Lanarkshire has also had to postpone certain non-emergency procedures because of the mass surge in demand.

New statistics published by Health Protection Scotland (HPS) show around 46 Scots in every 100,000 were suffering from the virus during the last week in December 2017.

BMA GPs committee chair Richard Vautrey said: 'With limited resources and rising demand it's the right thing to prioritise the sickest but this is yet another sign of how much pressure the NHS is under.

But the pressures on Scarborough's accident and emergency department are rapidly increasing.

Treliske is urging patients not to turn up at A&E unless it is an absolute emergency.

"The College welcomed the Welsh Government's winter resilience plans announced in November". In addition, the number of cases of acute respiratory illness has increased, with most of the outbreaks caused by flu and occurring in care homes. There is huge strain on A&E departments.

Hospitals are experiencing enormous pressure on services this winter.

"I know it's hard, I know it's frustrating, I know it's disappointing for people, and I apologise".

I received excellent treatment, and the staff saved my life, but I am concerned about the pressure on workers' morale.

Niall Dickson, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, which represents organisations across the healthcare system, also warned that the new figures did not reflect the scale of the problem facing the health service.

Instead of "fronting up" and offering leadership at this moment of crisis he inexplicably went to ground - running away from a record which has clearly contributed to the problems being faced by hospitals up and down the country. "There is an underlying mismatch between the capacity to deliver care and the level of care patients require", he said.

Countess of Chester Hospital cancels routine operations.

.

Like other hospitals planned surgery is being cancelled as are outpatient appointments to give greater support for emergency cases.

Countess bosses are reviewing the situation on a "weekly basis" and will always speak to patients directly in advance if there is a chance of their appointment or procedure being cancelled, the statement added.

"I knew that something was not normal because of the way the crew were talking", she said. Hospitals are at capacity, GP surgeries are full, and a shortage of social and community care means that many patients who no longer need to be in hospital can't be discharged as there is simply nowhere for them to go.
