Iceland Just Made It Illegal To Pay Men More Than Women

The legislation which took effect on January 1 2018 means larger firms will have to prove their male staff are not paid more than their female employees of face fines Iceland just made it illegal to pay men more than women for the same job

Iceland has become the first country to make it illegal for men to earn more than women at work.

The legislation, which was actually passed back in March but has only been effective since the New Year, will require all companies with 25 or more employees to undergo certification every three years to prove that they're following the new rules.

The five best performers in the global gender gap are Iceland, Norway, Finland, Rwanda and Sweden while Yemen is ranked as the lowest of the 144 countries.

The UK reported a 16.9 per cent pay gap between men and women in 2017. The American Association of University Women reports that while only two states in America have no equal-pay protection laws at all, only eight have strong ones.

Speaking at the Global Leaders" Meeting in 2015, former Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson said: "Men can not sit idly by when issues such as gender-based violence and the gender pay gap are being discussed. On paper, the US doesn't seem that far behind the world's most gender-equal country.

The new law was passed - perhaps not coincidentally - a year after female candidates won almost half the seats in Iceland's parliament. According to the Nordic Labour Journal, figures from 2010 showed about 8 percent of that year's gap remained "unexplained" after factoring in possible justifications.

Kremlin says Russian troops able to fend off attacks in Syria
The drone attack on the Russian assets in Syria also raised tensions between Russia and Turkey. They warned of the risk of more such attacks in any other country around the world.

Companies will now face fines if it is found that men are being paid more than women doing the same job.

Iceland already leads the world in pay equity between men and women, according to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report, and this move will likely only give the North Atlantic island nation an even bigger lead over the rest of the world when it comes to treating men and women equally at work.

What is remarkable about the new law in Iceland is how it enforcesequal pay standards.

The compliance deadline for firms with more than 250 employees is set for the end of 2018, and smaller companies will have several years to comply, depending on size. "To completely eradicate the gender pay gap, we need to tackle larger social issues".

In 1975, one fifth of the country's female population took to the streets of capital Reykjavik to protest women's rights, while 90 per cent of women took part in professional and domestic strikes on the same day to prove the worth of women.
