Jedi Mind Trick? Nissan Develops Brain-to-Vehicle Control

Nissan Brain To Vehicle Technology Simulator If you won't use your brain our machine will use it for you, Nissan tells drivers

It claims its Brain-to-Vehicle technology (known as B2V) will speed up reaction times - from the auto - and take stress from those at the wheel.

Ready for demonstration at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week, Nissan's futuristic tech allows vehicles to measure brain wave activity and use complex artificial intelligence algorithms to interpret the driver's intentions or detect discomfort.

"When most people think about autonomous driving, they have a very impersonal vision of the future, where humans relinquish control to the machines", said the carmaker's executive vice president Daniele Schillaci.

Brain-to-vehicle, or B2V, is the concept of a auto anticipating your driving reactions even before you have the chance to start turning the wheel or applying the brake. Times improves slightly as the technology adapts more to the driver.

Nissan calls the futuristic feature "brain-to-vehicle" or "B2V", and the chief design is to provide invaluable driving assistance both in manual and autonomous mode. By anticipating intended movement, the onboard systems are able to take appropriate actions such as turning the steering wheel or slowing the vehicle as much as 0.2 to 0.5 seconds faster than the driver can manage manually, while at the same time remaining mostly imperceptible.

The driver still turns the wheel or hits the gas pedal, however the automobile expects those movements and starts the actions 0.2 seconds to 0.5 seconds faster, stated Lucian Gheorghe, a senior innovation researcher at Nissan managing the project.

System can anticipate what a driver is going to do.

The systems can take actions such as turning the steering wheel or slowing the auto - 0.2 to 0.5 seconds faster than the driver, by expecting intended movement.

Instead of removing the human element completely, the driver's brain activity is measured and sent to the vehicle using a headband, the announcement said.

Nissan also recognizes the potential benefits B2V could hold for future autonomous systems as it has the ability to detect and analyze driver discomfort as well.

B2V is the first of its kind.

Nissan will use a driving simulator to display some aspects of the technology at CES. This concept appears to be a type of co-driving system, where neither the driver nor the vehicle completely dominates operations.

While the announcement focused on passenger vehicles, B2V technology could be helpful to boost safety in industries that use heavy machinery, including construction and manufacturing.
