Crosses in remembrance of Joann Ward and Brooke Ward killed in the shooting at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas, U.S., November 9, 2017.
Ryland Ward, now 6, who was shot in the Sutherland Springs church massacre, will leave the hospital on a fire truck Thursday.
Ward is one of the youngest survivors of the worst church shooting in USA history in which a deranged gunman killed 26 members of the First Baptist Church congregation.
According to Duncan, Ward was "heavily sedated" throughout most of his time at the hospital and went through "surgery after surgery".
Volunteer firefighter Rusty Duncan was one of the first responders to the church shooting and recalls finding Ryland.
"He couldn't wait to get out the hospital".
Ryland's grandmother, Sandy Ward, told ABC News that Ryland is trying to walk but keeps dragging his left foot and he also has limited use of his hip. Inside the church, Ward was the first person he noticed.
"It's just a miracle he survived and is doing as well as he is", she said. And it wasn't just locals who came to celebrate. "I had no idea what it was".
"I felt something holding my pant leg and I looked down and it was a little arm. I rolled her over and grabbed him and started running outside with him".
"The whole time I was with him, he was conscious and staring up at me".
Duncan said he visited the boy throughout his stay at the hospital, where he went through "surgery after surgery", ABC News reported.
A spokesperson with the University Health System said Ward is the last patient to be released from its care and some members of the Sutherland Springs community will be on hand to welcome Ward home.
The firefighter who rescued Ryland Ward from the Texas church shooting and tended to him until he was transported to the hospital, gave him a special ride home on Thursday.
