PM turns attention to shake-up of junior posts after cautious Cabinet reshuffle

May May “Dead woman walking”

Theresa May cleared out nearly all long-standing government figures who had served from 2010 in the second day of her reshuffle.

A major vacancy to be filled is that of first secretary of state after Damian Green was effectively sacked last month for lying about pornography found on his parliamentary computer in 2008.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt also spent more than 90 minutes in Downing Street where he resisted May's attempts to persuade him to switch to Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and allow Business Secretary Greg Clark to take on his role.

Ms Greening has been replaced by employment minister Damian Hinds.

There was little that was dramatic in Theresa May's reshuffle of her Cabinet on Monday, though the British Prime Minister has made the underlying objective obvious enough ~ to add more power to her elbow before the Brexit negotiations are in full flow.

Following the ministerial changes, May said the reshuffle makes the government look "more like the country it serves" with a "new generation" of "fresh talent".

Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond, Brexit Secretary David Davis, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Amber Rudd all stayed put - preserving a delicate balance of pro- and anti-EU voices that May navigates. She is reportedly preparing to move or sack at least half a dozen cabinet ministers on Monday, ahead of a shake-up of junior ministers on Tuesday.

Brandon Lewis was named Tory party chairman amid farcical scenes, which saw the Conservatives' official Twitter account incorrectly declare that the job had gone to Mr Grayling.

And, despite her intention to focus more on domestic matters, the next 12 months are likely to be dominated by negotiations with the European Union, leaving ministers with little time or energy to tackle issues like health, transportation and housing.

Hunt's title has been tweaked to Secretary of State For Health and Social Care.

There was much confusion after the Conservative party announced that the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling had been moved to party chairman, replacing Patrick McLoughlin. However, they argued that she should remain in her role, citing a need for stability.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove, International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt, and International Trade Secretary Liam Fox all remain in the same jobs.

David Mundell stays on as Scottish Secretary.

Terminator provider BPAS said it was "incredibly disappointed" with the decision due to the MP's past opposition to the decriminalisation of abortion.
