The foreign ministry today advised Turks not to fly to the States because of the increased terror acts and arbitrary arrests of Turkish citizens.

Turkey has warned its citizens about traveling to the United States, in retaliation for a new U.S. travel advisory about Turkey.

"Ankara is as safe as Washington, Istanbul is as safe as New York", Yildirim said.

"Turkish citizens traveling to the United States may be subjected to arbitrary detentions based on testimonies of unrespected sources", Reuters cited the ministry as saying.

Mark Nevinson, a nurse at James Cook Hospital, tweeted that he was "ashamed of the substandard care we are now offering". I received excellent treatment, and the staff saved my life, but I am concerned about the pressure on workers' morale.

The travel warning came a day after the United States urged its citizens to reconsider travel to Turkey, saying "terror groups continue plotting possible attacks in Turkey".

Ankara has said the case against the banker was based on false evidence and supported by the network of the cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom it blames for orchestrating a failed coup in 2016.

Ankara reacted furiously to last week's conviction in NY of Turkish banker Mehmet Hakan Atilla on charges of violating sanctions against Iran. Gulen denies any involvement, and USA officials say the legal process is still ongoing. The trial of the Turkish banker has also heightened tensions.

The ministry also warned of alleged "arbitrary arrests" of Turkish citizens, including public servants travelling to the United States for official duty.
