After a man in the United Kingdom ruptured the back of his throat during the maneuver, he was left unable to swallow and had difficulty speaking for days.

When doctors examined him, they noted a crackling sound when they pressed down on the skin on both sides of his neck, and this sound extended down to his rib cage.

The report details an otherwise healthy 34-year-old man in the United Kingdom who felt a popping, painful sensation in his throat immediately following a sneeze he had tried to stop by sealing off his mouth and nose.

The 34-year-old man turned up in an emergency room after reporting that when he prevented the sneeze, he developed a "popping sensation" in his neck, followed by immediate swelling.

The man ended up hospitalized and barely able to speak or swallow after he tried to stop a sneeze by holding his nose and shutting his mouth, according to a new report of his case.

Specialists at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust are now warning the public not to contain a sneeze in such a way or it could lead to "numerous complications". Yang said that meant there were air bubbles getting into the man's muscles and deep into his tissue.

Toni has departed to focus on his nephew's tennis academy but Nadal said their relationship remained intimate and "easy". However, the former world number one insisted he is far from favourite to take out the 106th Australian Open .

"In your nose itself, you can burst a blood vessel and get a bleeding nose". If you hold a sneeze back, that pressurized air will need to go somewhere.

This kind of sneezing injury is unusual, according to the report.

The researchers noted that the man's specific injury was extremely rare; most cases of a torn pharynx are caused by wayward surgery or neck trauma.

Klein said, if you are anxious about spreading germs with your sneezes, rather than hold it in, the best thing to do to avoid injury is to let it out.

But the doctors, writing in the journal BMJ Case Reports, said the outcome could have been far worse - the explosive internal forces caused by holding your nose while sneezing can kill you. Doctors did advise the man not to pinch his nose closed for future sneezes, and they advise others to heed the same advice.
