Tourists or local: How to survive a ballistic missile attack in Waikiki, Maui, Kauai or anywhere in Hawaii? Hawaii employee who accidentally sent out missile alert reassigned

For almost 40 minutes people waited.

The ballistic missile alerts come more than a month after Cold War-era sirens muffled when they were given a test run.

A false alarm warning people to seek shelter because of an incoming ballistic missile sent Hawaii into a panic Saturday.

Hawaiian emergency management officials said the original message was mistakenly sent out. "What do you do", she said.

The state adjutant general, Maj.

"It made us realize how unprepared we actually are, because everyone was like 'What the heck do we do?'" said Pettigrew.

Ajit Pai, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, has a message for Hawaii: Fix your systems.

Her vehicle , purse, wallet, phone were all later discovered abandoned in the area. Thank you all for your prayers! She was last heard from January 6 around 4 p.m.

The backlash from lawmakers was swift. Representative Tulsi Gabbaro said, "The people of Hawaii are paying the price for decades of failed leadership in this country for failure to directly negotiate to prevent getting to this point where ware are dealing with this threat today". "This was purely a state exercise", White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said.

Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz also took to Twitter on Saturday in the wake of the false alarm. The initial warning message read, "Ballistic missile threat inbound to Hawaii". A mobile alert informing of the false alarm didn't reach cellphones until about 40 minutes later.

The emergency alert notification sent out on Saturday was a false alarm caused by an employee pressing the "wrong button" during a shift change, according to Hawaii Gov. David Ige.

"I banged on their door and said 'guys get up!' For real we gotta get out of here, we already know we have only 15 minutes", says college student Austin Coleman. "A day when many in our community thought that our worst nightmare might actually be happening".

"I think the last thing we want is for our elected officials, citizens, everybody, to be scrambling thinking there really have a missile coming to Hawaii or any other kind of emergency". But there were problems there, too.

Late previous year, Hawaii reinstated its Cold War-era nuclear warning system amid heightened tensions between Washington and Pyongyang over North Korea's repeated weapons tests.
