Sydney Trains chief executive Howard Collins had warned if drivers refused to work unplanned or rostered overtime, it could cause fresh chaos.

Sydney train employees will go on strike for 24 hours from midnight Monday January 29.

The Rail, Tram, and Bus Union announced the 24-hour strike will begin at 12:01am on Monday, January 29th, with workers striking in protest of what they call an "shambolic" new timetable implemented by rail authorities.

"We're disappointed it's had to come to this, but management and the NSW Government haven't left us with any other options".

Mr Claassens said he was confident commuters would hold the New South Wales government and Sydney and NSW Trains management "ultimately responsible".

"All workers are asking for are fair working conditions and wages in return for the work they do".

As frustrating as this is going to be for commuters, please don't take your anger out on transport workers.

NSW transport minister Andrew Constance called the strike "ridiculous" and said it will shut down the city.

Tim Scott that the reported comments were "basically accurate", Scott told the Charleston-based Post and Courier . Two Republican senators who were also in the meeting, Sens. "And I'm telling you it's a gross misrepresentation".

The strike announcement comes after a horror week for the city's rail network, which left thousands of commuters stranded in peak hour.

When is the Sydney Trains strike?

"I want to wholeheartedly apologise to all of our customers". The union blamed staffing shortages, after a new intensive timetable was hurriedly rolled out last November. "The system most days is world class and some days, unfortunately, we let commuters down".

At the height of the delays, eight out of 10 train lines were not running to a timetable anymore, with no expected departure times available, and travellers were also turned away from certain platforms at Central and Wynyard due to significant overcrowding.

Mr Claassens said union members were "fed up" with the minister.

"Since 2013, we have only employed an extra 22 train staff and by their (management) own admission we are driving more and more trains every day", he said.

"We're still hopeful that management and the Government will come to the table and deliver an enterprise agreement that provides workers with the wages and conditions they deserve, so we don't have to take any more action".

In addition to the 24-hour strike, rail workers will wear campaign clothing and badges from Friday before implementing an indefinite ban on overtime that would begin on January 25, the day before the Australia Day long weekend.
