IRON MAN FAN Blackberry has launched cybersecurity software for self-driving cars dubbed Jarvis, created to keep hackers from hijacking autonomous vehicles.

The service could be expanded to work in other industries, and could provide a pivot point for BlackBerry to regain market share in the security space.

BlackBerry CEO John Chen showed up at the North American International Automotive Show (NAIAS) in Detroit on Monday to introduce the company's latest security product for the connected vehicle space.

At the North American International Automotive Show in Detroit, BlackBerry CEO John Chen announced "Jarvis", a cloud-based code scanning solution that hunts down vulnerabilities in a vehicle systems software.

It's no secret that BlackBerry has struggled to find its feet after the fall of its smartphone hardware business.

Early trials of Jarvis have already made an impact according to Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth, who said in a statement that the product cut the firm's time to review its code security from thirty days to seven minutes. This replaces a complicated manual scanning process, potentially saving developers money, time, and energy, the release noted.

Besides, Jarvis ensures production software adheres to industry standards as set by the Motor Industry Software Reliability Association (MISRA), a body which sets down guidelines for software developed in automobiles.

Blackberry is marketing the software to automakers which shall power its turnaround effort, however, it can further have applications in healthcare and industrial automation.

Jarvis will be offered to auto makers as a pay-as-you-go service, which they can use to alleviate some of the concerns that fleets of driverless cars zipping along public roads make tantalising targets for hobby hackers and pro cyber crooks alike. Jarvis aims to provide a single-pane view into the entire code base, with additional insights on how to protect current vulnerabilities and predict future issues. Results are provided immediately via dashboards with specific advisories. It also helps OEMs to customise rules to meet organization-specific objectives.

BlackBerry has started trialing Jarvis with several of the world's largest automakers.
