However, the company notes that the birth control app is not suitable for users under 18 and says most of its users are in their thirties.

The app was initially portrayed by multiple news outlets - including Business Insider - as "as effective as the pill using only math", but the problem is that it relies on couples to change their behavior and abstain from sex when the app says to do so. That bit of critical information is hidden in the app's description page: "Backed by clinical research it has been shown to be 99% effective in flawless use and 93% effective in typical use". It collects a woman's body temperature in the morning to determine her hormone levels and combines it with other information-sperm survival, temperature fluctuations, and cycle irregularities-to create an algorithm that decides when she should and shouldn't have sex. Deemed to be more effective than birth control pills, Natural Cycles' popularity shot up with the number of United Kingdom users spiking from 5,000 to 125,000 in 2017.

Natural Cycles presents itself as an alternative method to the contraceptive pill, more reliable and less restrictive.

Natural Cycles has been blamed for at least 37 unwanted pregnancies. The midwife Carina Montin advises women who are using the app to abandon it the Natural Cycles without delay in favor of "other safer contraception".

The hospital reported the app to the Medical Products Agency, the Swedish government agency for regulation and surveillance of drugs and medical devices.

The app claims to offer side effect-free contraception unlike the pill

"We'd like to reassure the medical community and the public that Natural Cycles is an effective, clinically proven, form of contraception, which hundreds of thousands of women worldwide trust as their birth control to prevent or plan a pregnancy".

Now, it's under fire in the wake of a report by a Swedish hospital, which states that 37 of the 668 patients who went to the hospital for abortions between September and December 2017 had been using the app. Business Insider reports that according to Swedish publication SVT, Södersjukhuset hospital in Stockholm reported Natural Cycles to the Medical Product Agency, a Swedish regulatory organization. It's possible they had sex on a red day or failed to accurately input the correct temperatures on a regular basis. As with any other form of contraception, Natural Cycles has never claimed it is 100% effective. Natural Cycles has a Pearl Index of 7, which means it is 93% effective at typical use, which we also communicate.

"As our user base increases, so will the amount of unintended pregnancies coming from Natural Cycles app users, which is an inevitable reality", Natural Cycles said in a statement sent to CNNMoney.

For women who have irregular cycles or who don't ovulate at the same time every month, apps like this won't work.

"In the end, what we want to do is add a new method of contraception that women can choose from without side effects", Scherwitzl said.
