As part of the new regulation, Uber licensed drivers must take an uninterrupted six-hour break after a 10 hours of driving.

A labor union representative told Bloomberg that the new policy meant nothing if the drivers weren't paid higher wages (which was causing the long hours).

Uber said the cap was an "industry first", adding it was unaware of any other United Kingdom private hire operator that had introduced the same limits. Telling drivers they must take breaks also undermines one of Uber's favorite talking points, that drivers can be their own boss and set their own schedule.

"While drivers only spend an average of 30 hours a week logged into our app, we want to do our part to ensure they don't drive exhausted", Uber's United Kingdom head of policy Andrew Byrne said.

Are the new rules enough to protect drivers and passengers?

"This is a toothless cap that still allows Uber's drivers to work over 100 hours a week, and is a PR stunt that will not improve passenger safety". They say that the policy is not issuing the main reason which is of low pay which forces the drivers to spend more time on roads.

Cold Beer Expansion Bill Fails In Senate Committee
You can buy cold wine in most stores, but the beer is warm in convenience and grocery stores, as well as pharmacies. Today, that left advocates for convenience stores and gas stations to fight the cold beer battle on their own.

"Unlike Uber drivers, all black cab drivers undertake enhanced driving tests and as such are well aware of the dangers of working long hours".

If you're an Uber driver in the United Kingdom, you might see a slight cut to your income in the near future if you tend to work long hours.

Uber is now appealing another legal decision, following a tribunal ruling in November that stipulated it must treat its drivers as "workers" entitled to the minimum wage and holiday pay.

On Tuesday, the Silicon Valley firm said from next week drivers will have to take a continuous six-hour break after the time spent on trips with passengers and on their way to picking someone up reaches 10 hours.

"The reason drivers are worn out is because they are not earning enough, since they need to work at least 34 hours a week just to break even", said James Farrar, of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain.
