The Russian side is ready to provide a platform for direct talks between Afghanistan's government and the Taliban movement (outlawed in Russia), the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on Wednesday due to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's upcoming visit to NY on January 18-19 where he will take part in the UN Security Council meetings on non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons and the situation in Afghanistan.

Though the Afghan government still controls less than two-thirds of the country, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on January 17 touted the new strategy as a success and specifically mentioned possible future direct talks with the Taliban.

She said Afghan officials had told the envoys that since the United States strategy was put in place "they're starting to see the Taliban concede, they are starting to see them move towards coming to the table".

"They feel confident that the Taliban will be coming to the table", Haley told reporters at United Nations headquarters.

Russian Federation is ready to provide a platform for direct talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban, according to the Foreign Ministry Wednesday. She also acknowledged Pakistan's "considerable sacrifices" in fighting terrorism.

While supporting a continuation of its relationship with the US, Pakistan said the ties could progress towards normalisation only if there were mutual trust and respect. Pakistan denies providing sanctuary for the Taliban.

However, Haley did not specify what measures could be taken to pressure Pakistan but the council does have the authority to enforce sanctions.

Reuters reported that a second back-channel meeting occurred over the weekend in Turkey, where it said individuals with Taliban connections met with representatives of Hizb-i Islami, the party of a former Taliban-allied commander who past year laid down arms to join Afghan politics. But Reuters reported that the Taliban's supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, who it said is widely believed to be hiding in Pakistan, ordered the exploratory talks in both Turkey and Islamabad.
