South Korea has also proposed that it send a 12-member delegation to North Korea on Tuesday to inspect preparations for a joint cultural event at the North's scenic Diamond Mountain and a training session between non-Olympic skiers at the North's Masik ski resort ahead of the Olympics in the South, the ministry said.

In a statement, Duckworth said she comes back to Washington with "a warning about how deadly and destructive renewed hostilities with North Korea would be". "We hope that the talks could go smoothly so as to help our art troupe perform well in the South".

The two sides have also agreed to hold military talks on solving border tensions.

Lee Hee-beom, head of the organizing committee for PyeongChang 2018, said North Korea will send athletes in pair figure skating, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and women's ice hockey.

North Korea has used the cheer squads before at worldwide sports events hosted by the South.

The details about the musicians in the 140-member group remained unclear immediately after the negotiations.

The name "Samjiyon Orchestra" has never appeared in North Korean media, although it has publicized a Samjiyon Band. "History tells us a very bitter lesson about North Korea".

The art troupe, named Samjiyon, includes orchestra members, singers and dancers, according to South Korean negotiators who attended Monday's talks. The flag featured prominently in the stands during the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, after officials barred spectators from bringing the North Korean flag into stadiums.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said yesterday he welcomed the recent dialogue between North and South Korea but marching together at the Winter Olympics won't denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

The women's hockey team is quickly becoming a symbol of reconciliation between the two Koreas.

North Korea is preparing a massive military parade on February 8, marking the 70th anniversary of its standing army, a day before the Olympics starts.

The back-and-forth between Kim and Trump has been ongoing for several months as the isolated country has continued to carry out missile and nuclear tests, in defiance of global pressure and United Nations resolutions.

The US Secretary of State refused to give any comments on the comments that were made last week by his boss Donald Trump that he had a good relationship with the leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un. The North regularly threatens to destroy the South, Japan and their major ally, the United States.

"I think it's pretty fresh that the Republic of Korea and also the DPRK are having conversations... without that maximum pressure campaign that so many countries have been involved with, North Korea would not be having talks with South Korea", she said.

"They should know that [the] train and bus carrying our delegation to the Olympics are still in Pyongyang..."
