Rene A. Boucher, 58, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was charged with assaulting a member of Congress resulting in personal injury, a felony under federal law, Josh J. Minkler, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of in, announced today.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of IN announced Friday that Boucher is pleading guilty to one count of assaulting a member of Congress, according to the Washington Post.

Paul told Fox News in late November that he wasn't sure the motive behind the alleged assault, saying the two had not spoken in roughly a decade.

Boucher has signed a plea agreement admitting assaulting a member of Congress resulting in personal injury, which is a felony under federal law, officials said. "Those who choose to commit such an act will be held accountable".

Authorities say Boucher was enraged and "had enough" after Paul supposedly stacked lawn waste on a pile near his yard.

Boucher then allegedly ran onto the Pauls' property and tackled the senator off of his riding lawnmower, court documents state.

Paul, a Republican, was wearing headphones while mowing his lawn in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on November 3 when his neighbor Rene Boucher, 58, became angered by seeing the 55-year-old senator stack brush near Boucher's property, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement. Boucher is expected to be sentenced at a later date.

Boucher's lawyer, Matthew Baker, confirmed to Newsweek that Boucher would plead guilty, and said he "continues to be very regretful".

If convicted under the federal statute for assaulting a member of Congress, Boucher would face a sentence of up to 10 years as well as a fine of up to $250,000. The spokesperson for Senator Rand Paul declined to comment. Boucher was charged with fourth-degree assault in Warren County.
