The update comes after Apple made headlines for purposefully slowing older iPhone batteries and then offering $29 battery replacements in response.

The company said the update will allow users to check the health of their battery and choose whether to turn off the part of the iPhone software that slows it down to preserve its battery life, Xinhua news agency reported.

Apple announced today that it will be investing $350 billion in the US economy over the next five years, creating more than 20,000 jobs.

The California-based company acknowledged in December that iPhone software can slow down some phones with battery problems and apologized for the issue. Senator John Thune, R-South Dakota, sent Apple CEO Tim Cook a letter with questions about Apple's slowdown feature and its transparency, and requested answers by January 23.

But What Is Considered Essential And Non-essential? Government functions are divided into essential and nonessential categories. Brown said he strongly opposes a government shutdown and is doing everything he can to ensure the government stays open.

Apple does not recommend that users opt out, Cook said, since the lithium-ion batteries in phones deteriorate over time, leading to sudden shutdowns in order to protect the other inner mechanisms. The advocacy group, Citizens United for Consumer Sovereignty, is accusing Apple of destruction of property and fraud. Earlier this month, the group filed a civil damage suit against Apple representing about 120 plaintiffs.

"For the sake of its loyal fans, Apple has to take responsibility over the slowing iPhones", the advocacy group's official Park Soon-jang told Reuters on Friday. These performance handicaps gave rise to conspiracy theories that Apple was deliberately throttling older models to encourage adoption of its newer releases.

A French prosecutor has also launched a preliminary investigation into Apple's alleged deception and planned obsolescence of its products.

Jones added that this was Apple's way of extending the battery life for people who want to keep their phones for longer than iPhones are created to last. With the update, Cook said, "We're going to give people the visibility of the health of their battery so it's very, very transparent - this hasn't been done before".

In a statement, the watchdog said the two companies pushed software updates to phones "without reporting the possible consequences" of the update and without information to maintain the performance they were promoted as having when they were sold. "This hasn't been done before".
