US House Passes Short-Term Spending Bill, Senate Fight Erupts

Pennsylvania state Rep. Rick Saccone’s weak fundraising numbers have raised some GOP concerns in the 18th District Trump to Pennsylvania, but don't call it a campaign trip

With the Senate at an impasse and the Friday-night deadline looming, the odds of a partial shutdown of the federal government are growing by the minute.

As soon as the House passed a short-term spending measure to avoid a government shutdown.it was onto the Senate, where a blame game quickly ensued.

Trump has also sought to cast blame on the Democrats in the event of a shutdown, tweeting Thursday, "A government shutdown will be devastating to our military. something the Dems care very little about!"

Republicans are targeting the Senate Democrats, saying their unwillingness to compromise on immigration is the core problem preventing an agreement from happening.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was not at the meeting, a source said, adding that he and Trump have been in touch during the day by telephone.

The spending package being voted on did not include enough military spending to please some Republicans, it had no protections for the Dreamers, immigrants who aspire for permanent USA residence, and its children's insurance provisions were less than what Democrats wanted. President Donald Trump announced in September that he was revoking the program and without action from Congress, DACA is set to expire in early March.

The temporary measure faces a tough road to passage in the Senate, where several Democrats must join the razor-thin Republican majority to reach the 60-vote threshold needed for it to pass.

Despite the delay, though, both Republicans and Democrats have said they support funding the program.

Other Republicans have also said they have issues with the bill, especially outside the context of comprehensive immigration reform.

"Now that we're 13 hours away from a government shutdown that Democrats would initiate and Democrats would own, the craziness of this seems to be dawning on my friend the Democratic Leader". Republicans were all but daring Democrats to scuttle the bill and force a shutdown because of immigration, which they said would hurt Democratic senators seeking re-election in 10 states that Trump carried in 2016.

"CHIP should be part of a long-term solution, not a 30 Day, or short term, extension", Trump tweeted.

"This is completely unfair and uncompassionate for my Democratic colleagues to filibuster government funding, harm our troops, and jeopardize health coverage for nine million children because extreme elements of their base want illegal immigration to crowd out every other priority".

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) hashed out a deal with Republican leaders to secure future votes on measures that would increase defense spending and tighten immigration laws. We do not want a shutdown.

Ryan went on to mention a segment CNN's Wolf Blitzer questioning how Republicans can let the government shut down while being in control of the House, the Senate, and the White House.

"I am trying to get us to come together in a bipartisan nature to get something done", said Schumer.

House members were told to stay in town in case they need to be called in for additional votes.

Other measures were attached to the spending bill that the House approved.

House Republicans tacked funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program onto the four-week spending bill in an effort to paint Democrats as obstructionists playing games with the health insurance of low-income children (though the CHIP funding crisis was engineered by Republicans). "What we'd really like the Democrats in the Senate to do is tell us why they don't like the bill", Mulvaney said.

The last government shutdown occurred in 2013 and lasted for 16 days.
