Azerbaijan Announces Snap Presidential Elections

Azerbaijan Announces Snap Presidential Elections Aliyev Calls Snap Presidential Election for April
Frank Williams | 07 February, 2018, 03:46

The order to hold early elections fully complies with the requirements of the Constitution and legislation of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani President's Assistant for Public and Political Affairs Ali Hasanov told Trend as he commented on the president's order to conduct early presidential elections in the country.

Aliev, 56, has been ruling Azerbaijan since 2003, succeeding his father, Heydar, who had served as president since 1993.

Azerbaijanis will be heading to the polls early this year to vote for president, roughly six months ahead of schedule.

Mammadov is the head of the Republican Alternative Movement (REAL), the most credible opposition group remaining in Azerbaijan after more than two decades of authoritarian consolidation begun by Aliyev's father and predecessor, Heydar Aliyev, and accelerated by the younger Aliyev.

Motives behind GOP-Nunes memo release deeply troubling
The memo further claims that Steele was being paid $160,000 by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign. Schumer says Trump's refusal to back the Democratic memo's release would show his intent to undermine the investigation.

Carnegie Europe senior fellow Thomas de Waal, a leading expert on the Caucasus, offers another explanation: "Azerbaijan's inconvenient prisoner", Ilgar Mammadov. Aliyev's office did not immediately explain the move. Azerbaijan's neighbor and enemy is transitioning into a parliamentary system and away from a top-heavy presidential regime, a situation that might discomfort Aliev, Altay Goyushov, an Azerbaijani historian, told EurasiaNet.org.

According to this theory, Russian Federation is having its own elections on March 18 and will be too busy with that to meddle in an Azerbaijani election less than a month later.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan will make a decision on the holding of extraordinary presidential election within a week. No other candidates have been nominated so far.
