Finally, Yuna Kim - a hero in South Korea following her figure skating gold medal at Vancouver 2010 - lit the Olympic flame to get the Games under way in earnest.

Kim Yong Nam, who is officially leading Pyongyang's diplomatic delegation to the Games, met Moon at a leaders' reception ahead of the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang. But most - if not all of them - will be seeing their wealthy, democratic neighbor for the first time.

Pence arrived here Thursday while Kim and other North Korean delegates, including North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's younger sister Kim Yo Jong, arrived earlier in the day.

In October 2017, Kim Yo Jong was named as a member to the Workers Party's Politburo, the country's highest political assembly.

She looked relaxed and TV footage showed her smiling constantly, occasionally glancing around at the facilities - in the manner of someone used to the public spotlight.

Organisers of South Korea's Winter Olympics apologised to the Iranian team before Friday's opening ceremony for what they called a misunderstanding over gifts of Samsung mobile phones. But when the two Koreas, who have been separated for 70 years, march in together, it should still be an electrifying moment on this peninsula and around the world.

Pence said the USA would "demand at the outset of any new dialogue or negotiations that the Kim regime put denuclearization on the table and take concrete steps with the world community to dismantle, permanently and irreversibly, their nuclear and ballistic missile programs".

Numerous protestors carried American flags, and one carried a banner making a direct plea to President Donald Trump.

"We're going to continue to put all the pressure to bear economically and diplomatically, while preserving all of our military options to see that that happens", Pence said in a segment that aired Friday morning on "Today". "Our president wants to change our country to be a communist country right now", Thasik Park said.

A Japanese official praised Pence for his strong words and statesmanship but declined to comment on Mr. Moon's performance.

The real Kim Jong Un did not travel to South Korea for the games, either.
